Our Story in OviedoFounded in Oviedo, Florida, in 2008, Nelumbo Jiu-Jitsu Academy is led by Sensei Eduardo “Eddie” Torres and provides Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and martial arts instruction for children, teens, adults, and families.
Our academy was built on the belief that martial arts should develop more than physical skill. Training should help students build confidence, discipline, resilience, character, technical ability, and a long-term appreciation for martial arts. |

Today, Nelumbo offers Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Kids Martial Arts, No-Gi, Judo, Self-Defense, Homeschool Martial Arts, and other structured programs in a safe and welcoming environment.
The Meaning Behind Nelumbo

The name Nelumbo comes from Nelumbo nucifera, the Sacred Lotus.
The lotus rises from muddy water and blooms above the surface. For us, it represents the martial arts journey — overcoming challenges, continuing to grow, and developing strength and character through adversity. The four primary petals in the Nelumbo logo represent four values that guide our academy:

Sensei Eduardo “Eddie” TorresSensei Eduardo Torres has more than 25 years of experience teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and self-defense and has led Nelumbo Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Oviedo since 2008.
His teaching approach focuses on strong fundamentals, technical understanding, patience with beginners, structured progression, and practical application. Sensei Torres is a student of Professor Marcello C. Monteiro and teaches Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at Nelumbo following Professor Monteiro’s structured, step-by-step curriculum. His goal is to help every student develop confidence, discipline, technical skill, and a long-term understanding of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu — whether they train for self-defense, fitness, recreation, personal development, or competition. |

Professor Marcello C. Monteiro is the founder of BJJ Coach International and the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructor of Sensei Eddie Torres.
Professor Monteiro is known for his structured, step-by-step Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu curriculum, designed to help students progress from strong fundamentals into more advanced technical development. His teaching system emphasizes self-defense, positioning, base, control, escapes, sweeps, reversals, attacks, submissions, and advanced technical development while maintaining the importance of strong fundamentals at every stage. At Nelumbo Jiu-Jitsu Academy, Sensei Torres follows this curriculum to give students an organized training path where each stage builds on the skills learned before it. |
